It was definitely a sliding doors year!
Weeks out of my innocent teens
With so many adventures to share.
There was a marriage first
And a brand-new name.
Before a move to Melbourne
And my first AFL Game.
All Greyhound Bus bound,
Long ago when tickets were paper
And traveller’s checks would abound.
And back when the Falkland War
Was the talk of the day,
I made another decision
Between home and away.
I stood beside the Australian Flag,
And pledged my allegiance
To the land of the ‘snag’… and the ‘dag’
A far cry from Aotearoa,
Whanau and chocolate Buzz Bars.
But Australia, you welcomed me
To forever dance amongst your stars.
Two score years ago minus one.
Today’s a day to pause and reflect.
On that decision to become an Aussie,
One I’ll never regret!
